What is this? (Explained Simply)

Imagine you're standing at the corner of a rectangular football field. You can walk along one side (let's call it 3 steps) and then along the other side (4 steps) to reach the opposite corner — that's 7 steps total. BUT if you could walk diagonally — cutting straight across — you'd only walk 5 steps! How do we know it's exactly 5? Because 3x3 + 4x4 = 9 + 16 = 25, and the square root of 25 is 5. That's Pythagoras! It tells you the shortcut distance across any rectangle or right triangle.

In a right triangle, the square of the hypotenuse (longest side) equals the sum of squares of the other two sides. This is one of the most fundamental theorems in mathematics!

Real-World Applications

Your phone/TV screen is measured diagonally: c = sqrt(a² + b²). A 16:9 screen with 14-inch width has diagonal = sqrt(14² + 7.9²) = 16 inches

A ladder against a wall: 5m ladder placed 3m from the wall reaches sqrt(25-9) = 4m high

GPS and maps use this to calculate straight-line distances between two points

What would an intelligent skeptic say?

Only works for flat surfaces and right triangles. Walk 3 km east and 4 km north on Earth, and the 'hypotenuse' isn't exactly 5 km — because Earth is curved. On large scales, you need spherical geometry. Also, Pythagoras didn't actually discover this — Babylonians knew it 1000 years earlier. We give credit to the wrong person.
